ePlatform School Spotlight of the Week - Ormiston Junior College
Kat B. Liu-Asomua, Associate Leader of Learning from Ormiston Junior College, did a short write-up on the ways in which they're engaging their students with reading and making the most out of their ePlatform Subscription - have a read below!
Our experience with ePlatform has been just amazing.
We are a new Jr College in a new community and have just opened in 2017. We have 275 learners from year 7 to 10, and will grow to 1000. Our school is extremely multi-cultural and we are proud to have learners from all over the world, the Pacific, and NZ in our community.
Part of our induction for all learners to our literacy and communication programme is "How to log-in to your ePlatform app to take out books" right in week 1 each year.
It is deeply connected to our library and our ability to run a Reader's Writer's workshop model of learning and empower learners to choose 'best-fit' books, 'model texts', and engage with a wide range of authors and text types for learning and for pleasure.
The ePlatform makes up a mobile library, and often learners and teachers can be seen looking for books together to help them develop specific parts of their own writing, looking for ideas, inspiration or research for projects, and enjoying books over the holiday breaks.
A key way we run our library and literacy budgets is by using trend data, and the request system to our collection. This helps us to make sure the high demand or popular titles are always available and has even meant that kids have started their own book clubs and literature circles and used the request feature to facilitate that.
Finally, we have just begun using the ePlatform to strategically ensure popular series are promoted, and our teachers can support learners moving between etexts and paper copies so that the learners are still using a variety of print, audio, and digital text types to continue to enhance their multi-literacy fluency.
I can't imagine teaching or running our library without it!
Thanks heaps - looking forward to continuing to grow our use!
