Case study: The power of two eBook collections.
For Casino High School in New South Wales, the establishment of two eBook collections has proved a winning combination. The school set out with a private collection, but the addition of ePlatform One: a shared eBook collection – has given the school access to a new wealth of eBooks as well as support for their literacy outcomes.
A generous, ready-made eLibrary that’s up and running.
Teacher Librarian Seth, acknowledges that a lot of work goes into keeping a school’s catalogue up to date. As ePlatform One takes this work away, “it saves the school money.” As well as the low cost factor, Seth also points out that the “changing nature, and broad selection also appeals.”
“For me personally,” says Seth, “It’s also about saving time.” He enjoys the fact that even though ePlatform One is an externally curated collection – he likes that the school is asked what books should be added. “I feel like it’s a collected effort – we have a say in what’s popular.”
A growing confidence in students’ reading.
“Kids love being able to look for their favourite authors,” says Seth. With ePlatform One, schools have shared access to more than 1,250 dynamically managed titles – so there is a large range of books on offer. “The biggest thing I’ve noticed though is their confidence. We are always looking for ways to encourage reading and for a number of students in our school, technology is the preferred medium, especially our reluctant readers. It appears to be removing some of the stigma of reading.” says Seth.
“I’ve received very good feedback from the teachers of students with special needs as well. A teacher and a student can read together via the Interactive Whiteboard with ePlatform, and in this particular situation it can save the need to buy a class set. ”explains Seth.
